The Awkward Words Blog focuses on the many strange, funny, and unusual words in the English language. I choose words that stand out in a conversation - the ones that grab your attention for just being awkward.
I wanted to start a blog for a long time, but I could never think of an original, interesting topic. One night, I was watching "The Golden Girls" and one line caught my attention. It was the episode "Big Daddy's Little Lady" where Dorothy and Rose write a song about Miami. Rose suggests they add the line, "Miami is nice, so I'll say it thrice!" When Dorothy protests using the word "thrice," Rose tells her, "It's a word!" Dorothy responds, "So is intrauterine - it doesn't belong in a song!" I immediately thought about how awkward the word "intrauterine" is and then it came to me to compile a list of all these awkward words.
With that, the Awkward Words Blog was born. It continues to grow and change with your suggestions and support. I hope you find it as entertaining as I have!
I use two sources for my information: dictionary.com and etymonline.com. I copy definition and word origin information directly from these sites and I do my best to attribute this information to them. I also use pictures from other websites, and I always include the web address of the site in the caption of the picture. I encourage you to visit and support these sites. If you own any of the information/pictures I use and would like them removed, please contact me and I will do so immediately. The example sentences included in the entries are of my creation.
The awkward words on this site are all compiled by me. They have come up in conversation, been in a television ad or a book, or been suggested by another person. Awkward words are everywhere - this blog has certainly taught me that.
